Before and After Photos

Benefits

African American women want a tummy tuck that accentuates their curves. The petite, model stick body is not the goal. Full-bodied women with curves want a flat tummy, leaving the curves in place.

A tummy tuck can be large or small in terms of the areas of the body that are addressed. A Mini Tummy Tuck may be all that some women need to achieve the silhouette they are after.

This procedure removes the small overhanging pouch of excess skin and fat but does not also tighten the underlying muscles. If the protruding belly is caused by both excess skin and slack muscles, this procedure won’t be adequate.

The standard tummy tuck will remove the excess skin and tighten the muscles to produce the flat tummy that everyone wants, no matter the ethnicity.[2]

Dr. Younai can perform a more extended tummy tuck which also removes excess fat from the hips and back which accentuates the waist, creating the curves that African American women so desire.

However, keloid scars are a concern for African Americans. Dr. Younai uses only internal sutures and surgical glue on the skin to prevent the formation of keloid scars.

Dr. Younai additionally performs African American liposuction, which procedurally is the same as any liposuction, but he puts special focus on the different desires of his patients. His artistic application when doing liposuction for African Americans differs depending on the needs of his patients.

A Recent Rise in Representation

From 2005 to 2013, the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found that black patients increased by 56%. In 2016, 8% of all plastic surgery procedures were for black patients.[3]

Types of Tummy Tucks

Mini Abdominoplasty

Often referred to as a “mini tummy tuck,” this procedure treats baggy skin in the lower stomach that is not able to be improved with diet and exercise. The surgeon removes the excess skin and fatty tissue via a shortened incision, providing the patient with a flattened tummy and no lower bulge in the abdomen. In the mini tummy tuck, the abdominal muscles generally don’t need plication.

Traditional Abdominoplasty

This is the most popular type of abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. The traditional approach addresses both the repair of the abdominal muscles as well as removing the excess skin and fatty tissue from the abdomen.[4] This procedure is most frequently requested by patients who have had multiple pregnancies. It is also appropriate for patients who have experienced extensive weight gain and loss. Tummy tuck candidates have loose skin and muscle at the abdomen that negatively affects their appearance and quality of life.

Extended Abdominoplasty

This particular approach is reserved for patients who have generally undergone significant weight loss, either by diet and exercise or with bariatric surgery. In this procedure, the excess skin and fatty tissue is removed from the abdomen, as in traditional abdominoplasty, but also the hips, and may extend onto the back. Generally in these patients, muscles in the flanks and abdomen are repaired

Patients who undergo this procedure see dramatic improvements in their body contour and in their overall wellbeing.

Recovery

Recovery varies according to the type of procedure. Patients having a mini tummy tuck are usually up and about within a few days, and back at work within two weeks. More extensive procedures will require longer recovery time. Patients undergoing a full tummy tuck should plan on being away from work for about three weeks. All tummy tuck procedures have an acute recovery stage, followed by weeks or months of continuous improvement in swelling and bruising until the final result is achieved.

Tummy Tucks and African American Skin

Dr. Younai takes specific steps when performing tummy tucks on African American patients to help reduce the chances of scarring. Although keloid scarring is generally less common than people realize, Dr. Younai will carefully evaluate your skin and your medical history to make sure a tummy tuck is right for you. In some cases, Dr. Younai can even utilize internal sutures to help prevent the formation of scars.[5]

FAQ

Is a tummy tuck for African American women done differently?

Dr. Sean Younai tells RealSelf that a tummy tuck for African American women is performed with a different emphasis than it is for other women in Los Angeles:

“African American women want to emphasize their curves and buttocks therefore when I perform a tummy tuck for African American women I give them more curves with liposculpture of the lower back in order to make the buttocks look more pronounced.”
