Revision liposuction is a secondary liposuction procedure that can address unsatisfactory aesthetic results from a prior liposuction surgery. Undergoing plastic surgery can be a big decision to make, both physically and emotionally. So, when things don’t go to plan, it can be a distressing and frustrating experience.

The goal of liposuction is to remove excess adipose tissue (fat) permanently from an area of the body for a more refined body contour. The most common areas targeted in this kind of procedure are the abdomen, the upper arms, the flanks, the buttocks, and the thighs. But on some occasions, the results may not look as we intended. Complications can occur during surgery or during the healing process. Issues with redundant skin, poor scar healing, and unsatisfactory skin conditions after liposuction can mean we’re left with results we can only improve with a secondary procedure. This situation, although not ideal, calls for help from an expert surgeon to correct prior liposuction irregularities. A revision liposuction procedure can help patients regain confidence in their curves!

Renowned liposuction specialist Sean Younai MD can address your concerns about previous unsatisfactory liposuction results and formulate a treatment plan that can help. He has performed thousands of liposuction procedures and takes great pride in the high levels of patient satisfaction he has achieved in his 25 years in cosmetic plastic surgery. He’ll put you at ease and help restore your peace of mind with a revision liposuction procedure at either his Beverly Hills or West Hollywood locations. About Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most popular and most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the world.(1) Common areas for liposuction include:

  • Abdomen
  • Inner thigh
  • Outer Thigh
  • Inner Thigh
  • Flanks
  • Upper Arms
  • Double Chin
  • Calves

Liposuction has been an incredibly popular cosmetic surgery option for many years. It permanently removes adipose tissue, more commonly referred to as fat. Many patients who are looking for a slimmer, more contoured body shape choose liposuction because it’s a fast, safe procedure with a minimal likelihood of complications. However, in situations where the aesthetic appearance of a fully healed liposuction procedure is not what the patient wants, it’s time to consider a second liposuction procedure to rectify the situation.

Liposuction Results: What Can Go Wrong?

Unfortunately, not every procedure produces the best results. And, in some cases, patients can be dissatisfied with the appearance of the area of treatment once it has fully healed. Here are some common reasons why patients seek revision liposuction.

  • Under-Correction

Under-correction refers to liposuction that has not removed a sufficient amount of adipose tissue. More common areas where under-correction can occur are above the elbow close to the liposuction incision, the flanks, close to the navel, at the hip joint, and above the knee.(2) This type of problem can result in unsightly bulges and noticeable disruptions in the contour of the area.

  • Uneven Liposuction

Body symmetry is important for a surgeon to achieve, especially after contouring procedures. In some cases, a prior liposuction procedure can result in uneven fat deposits. Where fat has been suctioned successfully, but less attention has been paid to body sculpting, a revision liposuction may be necessary.

  • Skin Sagging and Dimpling

Everyone reacts uniquely to liposuction and some procedures may result in skin laxity issues. In some patients, dimpling may appear in areas where there was none previously. Sometimes, sagging can occur due to a patient’s skin characteristics and its inability to retract once fat has been removed.

  • Hyperpigmentation and Scarring

Fortunately, because of the small incisions required, significant scarring following liposuction is unusual. However, where more noticeable scarring does occur, it can sometimes appear much darker than your natural skin color. If there are additional corrections needed to remove excess tissue, hyperpigmentation from the prior surgery may also be addressed at the same time.

Candidates for Revision Liposuction

Revision Liposuction beverly hills

You may be a good candidate for revision liposuction if a prior procedure you have undergone has produced unsatisfactory results. The most common areas for secondary surgery are the abdomen and the inner and outer thighs. We advise patients to wait at least a year after their first procedure before undergoing a secondary liposuction surgery. This is because over time, the scar tissue will soften, allowing for easier contour adjustments.

Important Considerations

Dr. Younai clarifies that, just like your first procedure, your secondary liposuction is not a weight loss surgery. Liposuction revision carries the same risks as your initial procedure, and your results will be based on what is aesthetically achievable. In some cases, including those where a prior incision site has experienced infection, or significant scarring, the patient should understand the aesthetic scope of secondary liposuction. Dr. Younai will discuss the best options for your procedure at your personal consultation, where he will perform a full examination of the area, and suggest the most effective treatment route for your circumstances.

Personal Consultation

A personal consultation with Dr. Younai is an opportunity for you to meet to discuss treatment goals. We will ask you to fill out our patient intake forms where you can detail your medical history and describe your initial liposuction experience. Please let us know the details, particularly with regard to any complications you may have experienced. Dr. Younai will take this opportunity to speak to you about your prior surgery and will conduct a thorough physical examination of the area. After he has evaluated all aspects of the prior surgery, he will draw up a revision liposuction treatment plan unique to you.

Revision Liposuction Procedure

Before we schedule your revision liposuction, we’ll give you the necessary information you’ll need to prepare for surgery. These instructions will be the same or similar to those you received before your first liposuction procedure, and must be followed closely.

On the day itself, Dr. Younai will mark the target areas for treatment with a permanent marker. He may also record your appearance by taking digital photos for comparison after your surgery.

We’ll ensure you’re comfortable in our operating room, then administer your anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Younai will carefully make secondary incisions into the treatment area. He will then resculpt the underlying tissue using a fine cannula, and trim any excess skin where necessary. He will carefully extract areas of fat that should have been targeted in your initial procedure, and ensure the area is aesthetically augmented, then suture it to conclude the procedure.

Results of Revision Liposuction

Dr. Younai’s goal is to ensure every one of his patients is happy with the results of their revision liposuction surgery. He will make sure you’re well-prepared to follow a clear recovery plan, and we’ll schedule follow-up appointments at our office to ensure you’re healing as expected.

Please Note: Your final results are heavily dependent on the extent of the changes needed to correct the anatomical irregularities from your initial liposuction procedure.

FAQ

Can a different surgeon perform my revision liposuction?

Absolutely! If you’re disappointed with the results of a prior surgery, most medical professionals would advise you to seek a different surgeon. When you’re researching providers, look for an experienced plastic surgeon who specializes in the latest liposuction techniques. A preliminary meeting is a good way to get to know your provider and decide whether they’re the right fit for your needs.

Can a revision liposuction procedure help with scarring?

Many plastic surgeons specialize in scar revision surgery as well as liposuction. If your main goal is to reduce the appearance of scarring, speak to your doctor about your secondary surgery options.

I received bad liposuction overseas, what should I do?

Medical tourism is now a common way for patients to get cheaper cosmetic surgery, however, the risks often outweigh the benefits. Along with Brazilian butt lifts, breast augmentation, and rhinoplasty, patients frequently seek low-cost liposuction treatments outside the United States. If you’ve undergone poorly performed liposuction overseas, and want to improve your appearance with a secondary liposuction procedure, schedule an appointment with a board-certified local surgeon.
