Before and After Photos

About Calf Liposuction

Until recently, women with large calves and poorly defined ankles had few choices in remedying this problem. The solution for many of them was to camouflage their large calves by only wearing long skirts or pants. Thanks to new advancements in body contouring, liposuction techniques can now address this area. Dr. Younai can target and remove fat deposits that are masking the natural and graceful shape of the lower leg, restoring its shape and removing excess bulk. Women who have had calf liposuction treatment in Los Angeles are delighted to be able to wear fashionable boots and short skirts again.

To perform calf liposuction, Dr. Younai prefers the tumescent method. This involves infusing a specialized saline formula into the target area, causing it to swell and become firm. This fluid contains an anesthetic (lidocaine) and a vasoconstrictor (epinephrine) which both serve particular purposes. The anesthetic keeps patients comfortable enough that there is no need for general anesthesia, which can be riskier and less convenient. The anesthesia can last up to 24 hours. The vasoconstrictor shrinks the capillaries, thus virtually eliminating blood loss. (1) With the tumescent method, patients experience far less bruising and swelling in recovery and can appreciate the results of their liposuction much faster than with other methods.

Once Dr. Younai has prepared the fat for removal, he makes small incisions around the lower leg to access the fat cells. He uses a micro-cannula, which is less than 3mm wide, to precisely remove excess fat deposits while sculpting the remaining fatty tissue. If the inner knee has accumulated fat, he can also remove it during the procedure. With calf liposuction, he provides a gently curving silhouette from the thigh to the ankle.

Benefits of Calf Liposuction

There are numerous convenient benefits to receiving calf liposuction from Dr. Younai. These include:

  • Improving the definition and contour of your calves
  • Removing excess fat deposits from the lower leg
  • Reducing the appearance of “cankles”
  • Refining the proportions and overall appearance of the leg
  • Experiencing a more comfortable procedure and quicker recovery with the tumescent method
  • Regaining confidence in your legs and boosting your self-esteem
  • Expanding your wardrobe to shorts and skirts

Who is a Candidate for Calf Liposuction?

Patients with excess fat on their calves and poorly-defined calves are good candidates for this procedure. If the fullness of the calves is caused by muscle, liposuction will not be effective in reducing their size. Bone structure is also a factor, particularly in the ankles. If you have large ankle bones, liposuction may not effectively improve their appearance. Most patients enjoy a marked improvement in their lower legs, even if the amount of fat that Dr. Younai removes is minimal. Small changes can make a big difference in the overall appearance of the leg.

To be eligible, you should have reasonable expectations and be in relatively good health. You should also be close to your target weight, within 30% of your normal BMI, and steadily so for at least six months before surgery. (2) This will ensure that Dr. Younai can accurately predict the long-term aesthetic outcomes of his techniques.

Preparation

Preparing for your calf liposuction procedure is an important step in the treatment process. We will give you personalized instructions that will help reduce the risk of complications during surgery and make your recovery quicker and more comfortable. If you smoke, you should refrain until your treatment area has completely healed. Smoking can constrict the blood vessels and slow down healing. Avoid NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like aspirin and ibuprofen as well. These substances, along with vitamin E and certain herbal supplements, have a blood-thinning effect that can lead to excess bleeding and bruising. You should also maintain a healthy and active lifestyle to bolster your immune system and your body’s resilience overall.

Due to the anesthesia and the treatment location, you will have limited mobility after your surgery. For this reason, you should arrange for a ride home on the day of your procedure. It will also help to prepare your home for recovery. Fill your prescriptions, stock your kitchen with healthy foods, and create a safe and comfortable space to maximize relaxation.

Calf Liposuction Procedure

Dr. Younai performs calf liposuction procedures on an outpatient basis. They typically take about two hours to complete. When you come in for your surgery, we will administer local anesthetic or IV sedation to supplement the tumescent fluid. When your fat has been prepared for removal, Dr. Younai will make small incisions around your lower legs. He will then use the microcannula to break apart the fat cells and remove them using suction. He will take great care in removing measured amounts of fat from around your leg to create a natural-looking contour. When your procedure is complete, we will look after you as you begin to recover. When you have reached a stable condition, you may go home.

Recovery

You will likely feel some nausea after the procedure. This is a common side effect, and we can provide medication to help. We can also prescribe medication to alleviate any discomfort. For the first twenty-four hours after your surgery, you may feel groggy and continue to feel fatigued for the next few days.

We will give you compression stockings to be worn continuously, except for showering, for several weeks. These will help to control swelling in your treatment area. You will also have drains in your incision sites to expel fluid buildup as a result of your surgery. We will let you know how to look after these and what to watch out for. Massaging your treatment area three or four times a day can speed up your healing by encouraging blood flow throughout your lower legs. Most patients are able to return to work after one week of downtime. However, you should avoid strenuous activity for roughly four weeks or until you are completely healed.

Results

You will be able to see an immediate improvement in the size and shape of your lower legs after your procedure. However, swelling will persist for up to six months, and until it goes down, you will not be able to see the complete aesthetic effects of your treatment. Your calves and ankles will look slimmer, more defined, and more pleasing. Your results will be long-lasting, as liposuction permanently removes fat cells. If your weight fluctuates, the remaining fat cells in your lower legs can grow and shrink, so maintaining a consistent diet and lifestyle will help to prolong your results.

FAQ

Can calf liposuction improve muscle definition?

Calf liposuction primarily targets the removal of excess fat from the calves. While it can enhance the contours and proportions of the calf area, it does not directly improve muscle definition. However, for some patients, reducing the layer of fat allows for better visualization and definition of their underlying muscle structures.

What does recovery from calf liposuction look like?

Recovering from a calf liposuction surgery typically requires one week or more of downtime. Surgeons have patients wear compression garments to control swelling for several weeks, and they usually place post-operative drains in the incisions to drain fluid buildup.

How long does a calf liposuction procedure take to complete?

Although this will vary based on the extent of the procedure, calf liposuction procedures last about two hours.

Are calf liposuction procedures painful?

Surgeons give adequate amounts of anesthesia or sedation to their patients before calf liposuction procedures to prevent discomfort completely. Patients may feel discomfort during recovery, which can be addressed with prescription medication or Tylenol.
